NO SURPRISES ACT

As of January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act protects clients from unexpected medical bills—including for mental health services.

What This Means for You

If you are uninsured or not using insurance, you have the right to:

  • Receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of the expected charges before your first appointment or upon request.

  • Know in advance how much your services will likely cost.

  • Dispute charges that are $400 or more above the Good Faith Estimate.

What’s a Good Faith Estimate?

A Good Faith Estimate is a written notice of the expected costs of services. It includes:

  • Your provider’s name and contact details

  • A description of the services you can expect

  • The estimated cost of services (including frequency and duration, if applicable)

  • The date the estimate was provided (valid for 12 months)

You can request this estimate at any time before committing to services.

Dispute a Bill

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate, you can:

  • File a dispute with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) within 120 calendar days of receiving the bill.

  • A small administrative fee may apply.
