No Surprises Act: Your Rights & Protections
As of January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act protects clients from unexpected medical bills—including mental health services.
What This Means for You
If you're uninsured or not using insurance, you have the right to:
Receive a "Good Faith Estimate" before your first appointment or upon request.
Know how much your services will likely cost ahead of time.
Dispute charges that are $400 or more above the estimate.
What’s a Good Faith Estimate?
A Good Faith Estimate is a written notice of the expected costs of services. It includes:
Your provider’s name and details
Description of services
Estimated costs (including frequency and duration if applicable)
Valid for 12 months from the date given
You can request this estimate at any time before committing to services.
Dispute a Bill
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate, you can:
File a dispute with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Do so within 120 calendar days of receiving the bill.
A small administrative fee may apply.
